Here are some of my favorite pieces of artwork that I have done over the past few years ... I hope you like them as much as I do!
During the summer of '99, I was inspired to paint this horse, a burning passionate spirit, held down and restrained by a force he didn't know existed until it was too late.
This painting may or may not be finished ... I'm debating putting a bridle and tight reins on him ... but maybe it's better to feel, and not necessarily see the restraint. We'll see.
This horse used to belong to U of F, but she was sold on May 1st, 1999. Her name's Maggie Got Lucky, or just "Maggie" for short. She's the sweetest thing, and she's kind and wonderful. If you couldn't tell, I fell in love with this horse. So I took
multitudes of pictures
, and done several drawings. This is one of them, done in crayon.
Here is a pencil sketch I did of her, several views of the same horse all on the same page.
Some babies out at the pre-vet barn at school.
Here's more of Maggie (although you're probably sick of her ... oh well!)
This is a really quick sketch of a jumper, I got bored, so I drew.
As you will find out, I love horses. However, I also have a sort of fetish for trains. The three following photographs that I've taken illustrate this point. The first two were taken with litho film, which isolates the blacks and whites, leaving very little shades of grey, producing a neat effect.
This photo was taken with regular black and white film, and I love it.
This is a pencil drawing of a Morgan horse.
I sketched this Standardbred horse at the county fair one summer. As a horse would come around the track, I picked a piece of it and drew it ... so this horse is actually a compilation of several. Standardbreds, however, are not supposed to canter, as this one is. I enjoyed seeing a horse break stride and "run," because I know that if I were one of them, pacing or trotting all the time would get so boring, so I would say, "more power to them!" (However, after working in the industry for three summers, I know how important it is for a horse to stay in stride—no money won = free ride to the dog food factory!! Besides, it’s so frustrating to work all week for a horse, and have them do nothing good on the track.)
This is a sketch of a generic horse I did from my head. (*note ... as it was pointed out to me ... horses don't run like this at all ... his stride is off ... "If the left front is outstretched while running, then the right hind should be forward and the left hind outstretched, you have it the opposite." Thanks Sean.)
This is a poorly scanned replica of my self portrait. It was done in colored pencil, and the actual colors are much more true to life. This piece is now permanently hanging on display in the lobby of my high school.
I also love photography. I really like this one because of the look of the sun shining "through" the stag's head.
Here is a quick pencil sketch of a pegasus I drew while sitting in English class in high school.
These next two are the front and back covers for my high school's literary magazine, the Orb. I was commissioned to design it, and since I love horses, guess what's all over the cover! It's really better looking in person, it's a "wraparound" cover style ... it looks like a huge herd of horses.
This photo was also taken with litho film, which works its best magic when the ground is covered in snow.
This was a photography assignment for a high school art class ... a white on white composition.
